Welcome to our first E-Edition of the KCOA Connection newsletter!

In an effort to communicate more effectively with KCOA members, we will now be sending out an electronic edition of the KCOA Connection newsletter instead of the previous pdf format.  We hope you will find this easier and more beneficial!

President's Message KCOA logo

I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought the 2011 annual conference of the Kansas County Officials Association was one of the best we have ever had!  The program sessions covered a variety of topics that were timely for everyone.  I really enjoyed "Leading Together for Quality Public Service" by Jonathan Morris and have implemented some of his strategies in my office.  I was touched by his memories of being close to "Ground Zero" during the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.  I would like to thank the KCOA Conference Committee and Kearney and Associates for all of their work in making our annual conference such a success.  In addition, many thanks to Past President Marilyn Nichols, Shawnee County Register of Deeds, for her outstanding leadership over the past year.

KCOA completed another successful year.  As everyone knows, the Shawnee County ballot question to make the County Treasurer appointed instead of elected was a resounding victory for our association and all Kansans who support the idea that local officials should be elected.  KCOA made an impact during the 2011 Legislative session as bills were successfully introduced and passed into law from both the County Clerks and Election Officials Association and the County Treasurers Association.  Special thanks to Steve Kearney and his staff at Kearney and Associates for their efforts in helping to pass this legislation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for allowing me to serve as President for the 2011-2012 year.  I promise I will do the best to serve our association to the best of my ability.  I am proud to be sitting alongside Vice President, Missie Gerritzen, Kearney County Register of Deeds, and Secretary-Treasurer, Sharon Utley, Allen County Treasurer as officers of the executive board.

In closing, I would like to ask each of you to get involved in KCOA.  Remember the more you are willing to put into our association - the more will you get out of it and the more successful all of us will be.

Sincerely,

Joe Grisolano

KCOA President

Crawford County Treasurer

KCOA Day at the Capitol - 2012 topeka capitol

Please make plans to attend the annual "KCOA day at the Capitol," to be held early in the 2012 Legislative session.  Dates and times will be announced in the near future.  It will be important for all of us to form a relationship with our local Legislators as it will be a busy Legislative year.

Affiliate News - Kansas County Treasurer's Association

The Kansas County Treasurer's Association met at the September meeting for KCOA to elect the following officers: President-Pat Sharp, Lane County; Vice-President-Kathy Tremont, Geary County; Secretary-Gayla Shields, Miami County Treasurer; Linda Kizzire, Sedgwick County; NW representative-Cheri Remington, Gove County; NE representative-Lisa Wright, Pottawatomie County; SC representative-Becky Fields, Harvey County.

The tax season has started with the mailing of tax statements and the collections, so you will find the treasurer offices throughout the state very busy in November and December.   From December 1 into 2012 will be a very exciting year for the Treasurers and their staff as a new implementation on the new DMVS will give a whole new aspect on vehicle transactions and drivers' license applications. The system will be a very big upgrade to what we have seen in the past. We all remember the days of the hand typed applications! Treasurers know that with any new programming, there can and will be times of trials, but if we give each other support, we will get through this. Treasurers and their staff will continue to enhance their knowledge of the new systems to better serve the public.

Treasurers are already working on a lot of cleanup on a few statutes that will entail minor changes, along with other issues that may need legislation.

To the team of treasurers who have given over two years of time working on the project, we applaud you and THANK YOU for your time and efforts. Team members are Kathy Tremont, Christie Bittel, Nancy Weeks, Dena MCDaniel, Gayla Shields, Tande Lentz, Martha Herridge, and Myra Burrell.

Thanks,
Patricia Sharp, President KCTA, Lane County Treasurer

Affiliate News - Kansas Register of Deeds Association

We know fall is here when the leaves start to fall from the trees, the weather changes from hot to cold and then back again several times before Christmas, and also a new President for our association is writing a brief newsletter!

Notes I want to pass on, include:
* I have attended several of our Association's Fall District meetings around the state and have had a very good time socializing and discussing business.
* Several of us are still seeing quite a few oil and gas searchers in our offices and some days it is elbow to elbow room in our vaults, but kindness and courtesy from all sides helps us get through the days.
* Our association members just received a chance to attend and receive some continuing education hours pertaining to Mortgage Electronic Registration (MERS) documents.
* Lots of information was given us about MERS, and we hope soon that we will be able to have some more solid wording and better understanding about these documents.

In closing, I hope and pray all get to enjoy friends and family during the next few months of our holiday seasons.  God Bless our friends, family, and those in the military who continue to serve and keep us safe in our great USA!
